Samsung is expected to unveil its next-generation smartphone, the Galaxy S IV, in New York City on Thursday, a launch which will confirm positions of the company as Apple’s biggest competitor.

The Korean tech giant has spreaded a lot of buzz surrounding the Thursday’s event, which will be live streamed online and in Times Square.

First, it sent out paper invitations at Mobile World Congress conference last month — a traditional move from Samsung’s rival, Apple — by drawing attention away from the show and onto its upcoming launch. Later, the Korean company organized a flash mob.

This will be Samsung’s first time launching a device in the U.S., and not overseas. Hyped by its “Unpacked” marketing campaign, the event will take place at Radio City Music Hall, nearby of Apple’s flagship store on Fifth Avenue.
“We introduced the Galaxy S III in London last year, and this time we changed the venue [to New York] … as we were bombarded with requests from U.S. mobile carriers to unveil the Galaxy S IV in the country,” JK Shin, Samsung Electronics’ mobile division chief, said last month.

A few days ago Samsung posted a series of teaser trailers — including comments such as, “This is going to be one of the most amazing products to hit the market since TVs went color” — and even tweeted a photo of the smartphone itself.

“It is a dark image, and hence it becomes difficult to fathom much from it. The images shows the front panel with “Samsung” written at the top of it. But the design of the phone in the image is reminiscent of the Galaxy S III. However, it could be a piece of misinformation to lead the curious technology buffs astray,” writes IBN Live.

Though the comoany doesn’t identify the the upcoming device by name, it mentions the smartphone’s launch date.

As written in the tweet, the Korean tech giant has been promoting the Galaxy S 4 with its “Unpacked” marketing campaign, publishing online a poster and video that teases the smartphone.
Earlier on Monday, a series of images published on a Chinese forum for the Samsung fans demonstrated a smartphone that is reported to be the new Galaxy S4.

The handset appears a bit larger than the previous version and The Verge, which picked up the photos, reports that the forum claims the phone has a 1080p display, runs Android 4.2.1, has a 1.8GHz Universal5410 processor and 2GB of RAM.

According to The Verge, those specs remind of recent rumours about the specifications of the Samsung Galaxy S4. The Universal5410, says The Verge, is “likely a codename for the Exynos Octa 5410, an eight-core processor with four A15 cores for power and four A7 cores for power efficiency”.
This follows reports last week claiming that the expected smartphone would scroll the screen by monitoring the movement of the user’s eyes.

The Samsung S Pen, used with the Galaxy Note range, includes an Air View feature which activates certain functions just by holding the stylus close to the screen without touching it.
The website cites its insiders claiming that the new version of the famous smartphone will also have a PHOLED screen, more energy efficient than a standard OLED screen.

The Galaxy S4is also expected to feature a 13-megapixel camera and a new photography mode called Samsung Orb that will capture 360-degree images. Screenshots published online last week suggested that the upcoming device would feature a 5-inch, 1080×1920 pixel display with 480 pixel-per-inch density.

As Mashable writes, we could also see the highly anticipated device comes in different colors, or at least a different tint. One teaser trailer shows a little boy who sees the device and says, “It’s my favorite color.”
